Do anything you wanna do

3527907088_7d4fa03868_m2Or rather, do what it is that you wanna do.

Walter Feigenson knows that publishing helps his internet presence and personal brand. He wrote a review of Bing, Microsoft’s new search engine shortly after it went public and was astonished to see that it came first in a search – before Microsoft’s own press release.

By writing a review, he positions himself as an expert. Or, as he puts it, he can analyse current trends and put together coherent thoughts on the subject.

It’s not just aspiring journalists and writers who can benefit from publishing their thoughts and ideas. In fact, just about anybody with a trade or a skill can highlight their expertise. Writing a blog, a comment in a blog, by helping others in your LinkedIn groups, or by tweeting advice, links and tidbits to your followers, you can become a subject expert.

The secret is to find your subject – the thing that you wanna do. This could be your present field, or you might fancy a career change. The next step is to just do it. Write about it, analyse current trends and new developments, comment and predict. By establishing your expertise and putting yourself out there, you become the person most likely to come up in conversation when a vacancy needs to be filled or a contract awarded.

And as Walter Feigenson says, if you can show the ability to think and communicate effectively, you’re very likely to show the same excellence in any job you undertake.
